We’re incredibly proud to announce that our amazing co-founder and CEO, Karen Scofield Seal has been selected as the winner of the prestigious Veuve Clicquot Bold Future Award 2023, which spotlights up-and-coming leaders of tomorrow.

The Bold Awards by Veuve Clicquot has been running since 1972; the first and longest-running international accolade for female business leaders. In the UK it has recognised some of the most notable business women and female entrepreneurs. The awards continue to take inspiration from Madame Clicquot, a woman whose bravery, drive and creativity led to entrepreneurial success.

Veuve Clicquot wants to support women who redefine success on their own terms and push boundaries for the better of other women in their industry – just as Madame Clicquot did two centuries ago.

One of the many catalysts for co-founding OCEANIUM was the BBC Documentary Podcast: Sex, Seaweed and Liberation which highlighted how seaweed farming could create economic agency and opportunities for women in East Africa. In some areas in Africa, 80% of seaweed farmers are women – highlighting the substantial potential this industry could have when scaled up for women.

“The Veuve Clicquot Bold Future Award is an amazing recognition of the incredibly bright future we have at OCEANIUM. We are a purpose led organisation and we truly believe in the power of seaweed to improve the health of people and our planet. I’m grateful that our work is being recognised with this prestigious award and that it will highlight the potential that OCEANIUM has to help shape our future. I’d love to see more female led businesses and I hope I can inspire others to be brave, audacious and follow their passion.”
